My name is Andrew and I am a Physician Associate— although I almost wasn’t. I couldn’t find the shadowing hours I felt I needed for my application. I got lucky. I had a distant connection: My cousin in-law’s brother-in-law.
I believe that you shouldn’t need a connection to enter healthcare, which is why I started ShadowSource.
How our process works
ShadowSource matches students and providers together based on mutual availability, location, and specialty. Our algorithm helps fill schedules by making recommendations based on close matches, all while keeping everyone’s information confidential until right before the shadow appointment.

It takes less than 15 minutes to register, and an additional 30 minutes for the HIPPA certification (don’t worry, you can complete that later). Create a profile including your education background, resume, personal statement, any professional accreditations, School info, and complete basic online training including a background check, identity verification, and HIPAA training. Other training may need to be completed on a clinic by clinic basis prior to shadowing.
Enter your desired days, location, specialty and apply. It’s that simple. We will try to find a match for you and give you all the information you need to have a successful shadowing opportunity. No match? No problem, we’ll suggest alternative dates and try again. We have done all the work to find providers who want to have students shadow.
Complete the shadowing experience, privately review it, and maintain your subscription to gain access to simplified recommendation letter submission, job opportunities for patient care experience, and message boards amongst pre-PA and PA students.
Take 10 minutes to create an account with basic information including your NPI, clinic location and hours (don’t worry, we will keep this information hidden from prospective students until you agree to have them shadow).
We do require that you complete a quick background check and verify your identity.
We will cover the cost and this information is immediately deleted once you are cleared. Next, enter your availability, then, just tell us how many students you would like to shadow you per month and we will do the rest. You can change these parameters at any time. Once a shadow is confirmed, we will relay all relevant information to you (or your delegate) and the student.
- If you don’t want us to confirm students automatically, you have the option to manually review their application.
After the shadow, confidentially review the student, and we will provide you with a document certifying your completion of category 2 CME*. If asked for a recommendation letter, we will help you write it and keep track of the deadlines.
For students, 15 minutes or less plus a 30 minute HIPPA training. For providers, 10 minutes or less.
We are sorry to see you go, but won’t hold it against you. Your profile will be marked as inactive and you will not be able to schedule new shadowing opportunities, have us facilitate your recommendation letters, nor access the job board. You can reactivate your membership at any point in the future.
We save it – not sell it. Our goal is to create a community of likeminded providers that you can come back to. Be that coming back to take on students to shadow, look for a job, or reconnect with colleagues – we make sure you don’t start from square one.
If an issue arises, your safety and comfort come first. You may end the shadowing session immediately—whether as a student or a provider. Afterward, please report the incident to us within 24 hours so we can investigate. Every report is taken seriously, and if a user violates our community standards, they are permanently removed from the ShadowSource network.

After each shadowing experience, both students and providers complete a confidential review, allowing us to identify and address any concerns right away. In addition, we provide a formal reporting process so any user can file a complaint, which we promptly investigate. These safeguards help us maintain a professional, respectful, and safe environment for everyone in the ShadowSource network.
